The work was published during Victor Hugo’s period in exile (1856-1870) in Guernsey, in the Channel Islands. An original drawing by the writer inserted at the beginning of the book is dedicated: “To Paul Meurice. Victor Hugo. Hauteville House, 1st January 1868”.  It’s a tribute to the trusted friend who was a very precious intermediary between the mainland and Jersey and Guernsey throughout his exile.
